I was slightly hampered on the way down by the fact that my water bottle holder lost one of its holding screws and was then swinging happily from side to side every time I hit a bump on the cycle track. Or turned a corner. As I got towards Cardiff it was threatening to fall off so I took a detour to The Bike Shed who were absolutely brilliant and put a new screw into it for me. For free. BIG thank you to them - if you need bike stuff in Cardiff, head for The Bike Shed in Pontcanna!
I picked up 250 printed flyers for another client while I was in town - heavy or what?! Despite the 'weight training' the journey home was quicker and by the time I reached Caerphilly I was whizzing along. On one of the few bits of proper road I was approaching the corner into a hump-back bridge a little quick when a car came over it on the wrong side of the road and also a little quick. I slammed my brakes on and WHACK - slid sideways. Luckily the car also slammed his brakes on so no major disaster. Slightly smacked elbow and hip - no permanent damage, but some cracking bruises!
In the evening the Melodeon Master and I took Not So Freaky Running Dog out and all was going well until a Jack Russell hurtled out of his house to beat her up - she flattened herself into the wall and hid behind us. Which was fine, except the wall had been newly painted with white paint. Oops!
Dalmation dog!
Luckily it washed out with shampoo...
On Saturday I also cycled the 6 mile round trip to Caerphilly to return some contact lenses as I was sent the wrong ones. Can't see a damned thing. Oops.
Today was the Mud Runner Classic. As my metatarsal is still healing I knew I wasn't able to run, but the Melodeon Master was playing for the junior's warm-up so we headed for Eastnor Castle. Beautiful day, fabulous mud - I was slightly sad to not be competing. Only slightly! Elsie (Head of Everything at Mud Runner) asked if I could backmark for the juniors, just walking behind them for their 5k muddy run. Yep, no problem. I walked at the start, but then the lure of lush green fields was too much and I decided to have a mini-jog for about 300 metres. And then the metatarsal started hurting again so I really did walk the rest of it. Lovely walk. I really have found my distance and speed...
That's me at the end, carrying rubbish I'd picked up on the way and looking stunningly clean. I didn't even drown my walkie-talkie, so things are looking up on the 'professional back-marker' front.
I had passed some amazing mushrooms in the castle grounds and as the Melodeon Master and I had planned to spend the afternoon foraging, we walked back with Not So Freaky Running Dog to have a look. We ended up on about 75 yards of the adults' Mud Runner course and I said it would be really weird if we saw Fit Mark who I thought was running with The Cheesemeister. The Melodeon Master asked how long they would take, I said 'about now-ish' and we turned round to see them running along the path. We duly cheered and whooped encouragement at Fit Mark and The Cheesemeister except as we don't know him we were cheering the wrong person. Fit Mark pointed him out and we whooped some more and then they were gone. 10k and we all ended up on the same 75 yards of path. How spooky is that!!
