Bicycles and dogs....

I've been trying for ages to get Not So Freaky Running Dog on a bicycle - she'd be sooooo much better at triathlons than me because she's good at swimming and a really really fast runner.

So yesterday I cycled to dog training (18 miles) and then cycled home again (weirdly, also 18 miles).  The Melodeon Master took Not So Freaky Running Dog in the car and, whilst she was brilliant at the whole 'dog training' bit, she's still not getting the hang of the bike.   I was slower getting home than getting there, but it was more uphill on the homeward leg (bound to be - heading from the coast to the Welsh valleys of home).

The first (and last) 5 miles of my trip was hilly (gotta love Caerphilly, eh?) but once I was down towards Newport it was FLAT.  This is an entirely new experience for me - it's BRILLIANT!  Wow, it's so much easier to cycle, you get places and you don't have to puff so much.  Loving the flat roads....

On my way there I was overtaken (well, he came up behind me and then we rode together in a very companionable fashion for a while before he whizzed off) by a chap on a road bike.  We got chatting as you do and he found out I was training for Ride London 2014 (which is 100 miles around London).  I was feeling fairly pleased with myself until he said that he was training for London to Barcelona.  900 odd miles in 9 days.  Now that's a proper bike ride...

As I'm now avoiding main roads until the winter is over (two close shaves too many due to idiot drivers), I'm sussing out the Sustrans routes.

But only the flat ones.
