Six Nations style training...

Well, if it's good enough for the Wales Rugby team...

On Friday, in a very beautiful heavy frost, I did a hilly slippery 5k - not so much IceBreaker as AnkleBreaker so I went especially slowly - and I am in training for being last, don't forget!

Today was 'running up sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr' which is apparently what the Wales Rugby team do to get fit. I should have gone better prepared, rather than wearing heavy walking boots, thermal socks, 84 layers, a fleece, waterproof jacket, gloves and a woolly hat... It did start out as 'walking the dogs' so I was suitably dressed for that and the sub-zero conditions at least...

New Running Dog has recently developed a phobia of, um, twigs. Yes, twigs. As we live in the country in a wooded area, this is Not Good. We think it has something to do with a recent bout of stomach cramps that she had... She's now had every blood test and scan known to the vets to rule out anything physical and last weekend she had a visit from a doggy psychiatrist. Really - they exist! If she steps on a twig she freaks out, shakes with terror and won't move... We've carried her home once already....

Anyway, we figured Merthyr Mawr (home of the Christmas Pudding Race) would be a good place to walk as it's sand, not woods. Sand is Good Stuff, being soft and not shaped like twigs... We met Toby, a very handsome dalmation, who raced New Running Dog up and down the biggest dune, which is where I joined in. I think I got lapped three times... Rubbish Running Dog lay on her back in the sand and had her tummy tickled.

As New Running Dog was having such a fab time we walked a bit further, stepped on a twig and, well, came to a grinding halt. We tried cajoling, persuading, food, huge enthusiasm, everything... still Game Over.

So, just like the Wales Rugby team, I did weight training. I carried New Running Dog back to the car... I have, at least, found a way of carrying her comfortably...

And you'll notice that it's me doing the carrying... Guy says he's not in training for anything so he'd take the photo instead...
