Final Training!

It's been a Very Exciting Week for all sorts of reasons, not least because the IceBreaker is now only seven days away...

On Wednesday I went for a 10k run without stopping including the Tardis hill ('it's bigger than it looks') and as I was plodding along I had a text - obviously I was going slowly enough to read it. It was from Ice Cream Sian who said she was looking at the IceBreaker website and texted 'OMG I am SO SCARED! Do you really think we will be able to do it? Have you been training?' As I'd made it up the Tardis by the time I'd read the text I phoned Ice Cream Sian back to explain that three runs (a 2k, a 5k and now a 10k) didn't really constitute 'training' as much as 'making sure nothing actually falls off if I run a bit' and that I hadn't been on the MTB since before Christmas and that I wasn't going to push her to enter as it is quite an arduous race and I really don't want her to worry and if she didn't I wouldn't think she was a wuss or anything and then I realised that I was talking to nobody as the signal had disappeared somewhere in the woods...

I spent the rest of my 10k thinking that she was Probably Very Sensible and wouldn't enter - I mean, who's honestly going to tackle a 10k mud run, 20k MTB ride, 3k mud run without training? And she's just moved house and all that so really it would be perfectly reasonable to give it a miss.

I arrived home to an email from Ice Cream Sian headed OMG!!!! and then 'OK I have just entered!!!! I am now totally terrified... have done zilch training.... Just to confirm we do get mud master status and a hoodie from this don't we???'

YAY! So we're a Team of Two Backmarkers. YAY! I am VERY excited that I will have company on the way round, and so I set about finding kit to make our lives more comfortable - proper socks and head wrap thingies to keep our ears and noses warm on the bike section. On the Facebook page for IceBreaker people have been saying what they're going to do in transition - the bit where you stop running and start cycling. No one has yet mentioned the word 'picnic'...

My Team-Mate and I chatted briefly on the phone and agreed that it would be a good idea to go training today. Just a little 8k run and a bit on the bikes. Except that Ice Cream Sian really has just moved house so hasn't got any free time, and her bike needs a service as it's covered in cobwebs. And my back hasn't really recovered from Wednesday's 10k. So we didn't.

Actually, that's not strictly true - Guy and I went out on our bikes for a short ride this afternoon. We went twice as far as Charlie! Sadly, and I feel I must point this out before Fit Mark does, that's not Charly who's my nephew and a twenty-something* keen and very fit downhill mountain bike person doing 30k on a Sunday just for fun, it's Charlie who is 20 months old and has a wooden tricycle... He went as far as the factory on his bike today and so did I. Except I did it twice.

*Yes, 'twenty-something' is a little vague as he's my nephew and I really ought to remember when he was born, but I'm rubbish with dates and I don't really do 'traditional auntie' stuff. Last birthday I got him a lump hammer...

So that's it. A week to go. I am planning to rest on Friday and Saturday, get my kit ready, make sure that Ice Cream Sian has everything she needs (including a working bike) and then, at the last minute, PANIC.

It's about the best preparation I can do...
