I ran today. Yay! OK, so it was slow, but I did my little 3k route again just to see if the legs would work. The legs were fine, but the chest is still rattling… Fit Mark has kindly been reading my ramblings and noticed that I Googled ‘Mud Running with chesty cough’ without vast success. Turns out he and his lovely wife Louise are BOTH pharmacists! Handy or what! On the way to the Mud Run yesterday he was saying that cough medicine is a waste of time (yep, got through two bottles so far, totally agree with that sentiment) and that I would be better steaming my head over a bowl of hot water and drinking alcohol, both of which thin the, er, mucus and help it to disappear.
I am always keen to follow the wise words of an expert and, as the words include ‘alcohol’ I am now (Sunday evening) following his advice to the letter. Sitting at the kitchen table with my head over a bowl of hot water, bottle of Sloe Gin at my right hand, jar of local runny honey to aid the sore throat, last night’s Strictly on the telly and the laptop handy to write the blog. Marvellous.
I alternate steaming my head (breathe in deeply, cough a bit, repeat) with a swig from the Sloe Gin bottle, a sip of honey and a nosey at Strictly and a bit of blogging when my head is out from under the towel. Marvellous.
Damned fine advishe.
Can't beat a lemsip and brandy. Lemon paracetamol and alcohol - its not just for colds you know. In hospital paracetamol is the first pain killer of choice even after a major op. I kid you not we use it for EVERYTHING (unless your allergic to paracetamol of course)

Paracetamol, definitely, and drinking anything with honey in helps too, Lemon and ginger tea is fab.
ReplyDeleteI find Airwaves chewing gum helps with the breathing too. when I can taste how awful they are, I know I'm getting better, a good indicator!
