It's Easter weekend, four days off and all the time in the world to go for long bike rides....
Er, no. For various reasons it hasn't quite panned out like that and so far my 'getting to bed' times have been 2am and 1am... zzzzzzz. So I'm making do with a quick hour here and there on the turbo trainer. And still suffering with The Saddle Issue.
So far I've raised it, lowered it, angled it forward, angled it back and angled it sideways. In both directions. I've tried the original saddle, the MTB saddle, Italian 1, Italian 2 and the American. I've tried padded J-Lo trousers, two pairs of trousers, triathlon trousers and a towel on the saddle. But I think I've finally cracked it.
Reader, I changed the bike.
Yep. In a rather roundabout way, it seems I have finally cracked it. My plan was to go out on the road bike over Easter (which hasn't happened - see above) but that's not possible because my back tyre is now completely bald ["There's nothing wrong with bald" - Melodeon Master] due to the pressure being applied by the turbo roller. Fit Mark had warned me this would happen but, quite honestly, I didn't think I had enough pressure applied to make any difference. Well, it seems I did! So much in fact, that the centre of my rear road tyre is worn completely smooth. I've been meaning to get to the bike shop to get a new rear tyre. Or a complete new rear wheel to use on the turbo, and then it occurred to me that, hanging on the wall behind me, was the answer.
The Melodeon Master's road bike. So I was going to just pinch the rear wheel to go out for a ride and then started wondering about the bike itself. It's the same as mine, just a bit bigger. When we bought them we got assessed and the Melodeon Master has a 21" frame (his bike, not him personally, that would make him a person of restricted growth), I got assessed as needing a 20" frame (which of course is 'between sizes') so I had a 19" frame.
Anyway, enough rambling. I swapped the frames, put my bald back wheel on the bigger frame, put Italian 2 saddle on the seat post, jammed the back wheel in to the turbo trainer and started pedalling.
Result! On a pain scale of 1-10 I'm now registering 2 instead of 8.
HOORAY!
Now all I need to do is get some sleep and get out on the bike for real...
And hope the Melodeon Master doesn't want his bike back.
