The Wrong Shoes...

So, IceBreaker in a week, eh?  Training has gone well, I am now officially in 'taper down' mode and I'm already planning what I need to take with me...  I am, in fact, Worryingly Organised.

I also have New Shoes.  I have, incredibly, worn my old mud runners out - no grip at all in them any more, so it was time to get new ones.  I had to wait until Chris the Chiro could tell me whether I needed shoes with support, or 'neutral' shoes, so I didn't actually get them until a week ago Friday.  And then what with Work and Stuff I didn't get out for a run until Friday of this week to test them out...

I put my non-slip laces in my new shoes, put them on and took a photo of them being clean...

And then I went running.  5.5k up across Rudry common - very steep, good for fitness, nice run.  And when I got back New Running Dog (now renamed Freaky Dog) said she'd like to go out so we went and squeaked around the fields for a couple of k.  Just to be clear, she did the squeaking.  Well, I only squeaked once when I wanted her to be closer to my left leg so said 'CLOSE' very loudly.  This, in Freaky Dog vocabulary, means 'turn right'.  So she did.  And I tripped over her.  And squeaked.

And my feet were fine, if muddy...

No blisters at all, no sore bits, new shoes nicely run in ahead of IceBreaker.  Yay!

It was as I was hosing them down under a cold tap that I noticed they were Adidas.  Funny, that, as my old mud runners were Asics, and I'd got the same again.  It was only when I looked at the shoe rack that I realised I'd picked up The Wrong Shoes.  The Adidas were given to me by Wee Gill as they didn't fit her, but they're not right for my feet.  The only time I used them I got a stiff knee...

So, I've usefully run 7.5k in completely The Wrong Shoes.  And got a stiff knee again...

Oh dear.

I've now taken the laces out of the Adidas, put them in the Asics and gone back out again.  On the bike.  No, it's not running but it was a start...  And a little hilly 4k today to test them out again.  Seem fine, but can I really risk a 10k mud run plus running with the bike plus 3k in shoes I've hardly run in?  Although the grip is so much better I really should.  Although I might get blisters so I really shouldn't.

Oh dear...

  1. I cant believe that there is less than a week to go. Hardly any training done and I still haven't sorted out a bike. I borrowed a bike from my mate last year. Just as well, as it was aluminium and I spent most of the bike section pushing it. I see that they are doing the bike section in reverse. All I can think about is the steep downhill from the obelisk now being a steep uphill!!..............Mad Mick
